I have never worked.

In response to a less than friendly email I received 01 Sept 2017.

To whom it may concern:

For ten years, I did not work as a hotel maid, summer and winter, until my hands bled from the chemicals and the cold, and my body was permanently damaged from the physical labor.

I never worked in a sewing factory in the sweltering heat sewing piecework, hundreds of pieces a day until I thought I’d go blind from the fibers that floated in the air and clogged my nostrils and lungs.

I never worked the closing shift in a convenience store, stocking shelves, sweeping and mopping until my arms ached and I never overcame the fear of being robbed and killed.

I never worked in a hospital, registering emergency room patients – or what was left of them. Nor did I stand on my feet for entire shifts or fall asleep from exhaustion against a wall.

I never worked in a hot, muddy greenhouse carrying pots of rotten succulents or pushing wheelbarrows full or plants that succumbed to the winter temps. I never hoisted giant bags of perlite, vermiculite, sand, and bales of peat over my shoulders to the cement mixer we used to make potting soil or a cough from the rising dust of the tumbling mixture.  I did not stand for hours sewing seeds in a hotbed or transplanting seedlings nor was I exposed to toxic chemicals that were used liberally.  I never went hours without a bathroom break or a sip of potable water because there was neither and I never had to haul ten gallons of water at a time from the pond down the hill when the pump went down.

I never loaded bales of hay or 50# bags of feed or rose at daybreak to milk a quartet of goats, then hurry in to strain the milk and chill it down quickly in one-gallon glass jars, filling every shelf of the fridge. I never trimmed hooves, sheared hair or felt the heartbreak when a bottle-fed kid didn’t make it.

I never worked for $6 a day, sorting through nasty cast-off clothing for salvageable items to resell and I surely must not have been bitten by head lice and fleas.  But, by golly, I managed to buy my children’s Christmas gifts from what people like you threw away.

I never raised two children or made a house our home. Or raised a garden, mowed an acreage, cleared brush,  planted trees, built a septic tank, back-filled lateral lines or mixed cement by hand. I never re-plumbed an entire house, replaced floors, insulation or sub-floors, nor have I crawled underneath the house to repair water leaks when the heat tape failed to protect the pipes after losing electricity for ten days or an especially cold period of winter.

I worked on a marriage, my children’s happiness and my own self-worth.  I made a vow to stay with the marriage even through the bad times.  I vowed to raise my children to be respectful and honest. I made sure they knew not just their immediate family and friends but their grandparents and the large extended families.  They spent most weekends on a working farm, learning farm skills and they have retained that to this day. Those weekends were as valuable to my children as they were to the grandparents who found special favor with them and treated them with great love and respect. My children became their favorites.

They also spent time with the other set of grandparents who taught them a different culture, la raza y la importancia de la familia.  They met their tíos y tías grandes  and knew the love of their bisabuela.  They place great value on family, present, and past.  The present immediate family is small.  They have a few first cousins on their fathers’ side, but none on mine and that’s okay. They have lots of second, third, fourth and more and they are great fun to meet and know. We all believe that quality is better than quantity.

Quality of life is also greater than the quantity of coin.

Except for the losses of people close to me, I’ve lived a good life and I know that it will only last another year or two at most.  There are things I would like to do but I’m limited without stem cell therapy or a lung transplant and not even the less expensive ($10K) of those are attainable. So, I will be happy with what I have, as long as I have.  Currently, I only want to see my grandchildren again and then go to visit a dear friend in the Delta, drink margaritas and listen to blues.

Do no harm. Hug your dog or cat.  Say “I love you” to those you love.  Have ice cream when you can.

And don’t be afraid to prune those broken branches. The tree will survive.

This tree will survive.

Max and me.

Max was rescued from death row at a filthy municipal dog pound. I saw his face and vowed that he would not stay another night there. I fostered, then adopted Max in early 2012. And the rest, as they say, is history.
My friend, Max is not movie star or famous for any of his talents. He's not trained very well, except to hop into the truck when we "go", put "paws up" when we get on and off leash and gives 'hugs' by closing his eyes and laying his head against my shoulder, arm or face. He doesn't have a YouTube following and has only starred in a few of my shaky videos and blurry snapshots and no one pays for either. He doesn't have fancy breeding or a pedigree and neither do I, so I guess we fit together pretty well. Max's favorite thing is to be with me. He lies by my feet when I am working at my desk, he sleeps beside me at night, rides along to my doctor appointments, errands and shopping with me and loves to go to Sonic for a junior burger, plain and dry. I call him my unofficial service/therapy dog because he has saved my life a few times, but mostly, he is a best friend and a joy in my life.
Max has lymphosarcoma. Without treatment, his prognosis was 3 to 6 months. With treatment, he is expected to go into a remission that will last an average of 12 months. Each time the lymphoma shows up, he will be treated, but the remissions will be shorter in length with each treatment, and each moment will be precious.
Any donation amount is greatly appreciated.

Humble and gratefully yours,
Karen – Max's mom.

Princess Blackie

Image
Princess Blackie came to live with three young brothers when she was just a baby. They have given her lots of love and in return she has been a loving, calm, best friend to them. Princess Blackie was out on adventure and stumbled across a steel trap. The trap nearly severed her leg. Although in pain, Princess Blackie has been a real trooper throughout the veterinary examination to determine if her leg may be saved. Unfortunately, it cannot and requires amputation to save Princess Blackie's life. Almost as unfortunate is the fact that the three young brothers and their mom cannot afford to pay for the amputation which is estimated to cost between $540 and $880. The family decided to have Princess Blackie put down. Well, we cannot let best friends be separated like that and since Princess Blackie is a healthy kitty in all other respects, we want to help save her life and prevent these little boys from the sadness of losing a pet. I know, even as an adult, how I would feel if euthanasia was my only affordable option if put in the same situation. We need to keep this little family together and I am asking for donations, either on Princess Blackie's ChipIn page or directly by telephone via credit/debit card to Arbuckle Veterinary Clinic, Sulphur, OK, 580-622-3133. We know you remember your own first pet and hope that you will find it in your heart to help these three little boys hang on to their best friend and beloved Princess Blackie. Any amount is very much appreciated. Thank you.

Seven dogs at a tiny high-kill shelter can have a second chance

Seven dogs at a small, rural high kill shelter on the Oklahoma-Texas border can have a second chance at life with your help. Any amount is welcomed and appreciated. A rescue in NY has agreed to take all seven but only if they are vetted prior to transport.

The Eve of Christmas Eve or Winter Solstice + 1 day.

Quick: there is no full sized tree, no wrapped gifts, no stockings and no baking done. I may go to Mass, but otherwise I will be staying home and resting.

This is C.J., a male Staffordshire Terrier/Bull Terrier mix. C.J. is brindle and white. . CJ is less than a year old and not neutered. He is excellent around children (in a home that has about 9 children at any given time running around him) and good with other animals so long as they are not other male dogs (this is likely due to him not being neutered) He has had all his vaccines and is house broken. C.J. is in Sulphur, OK, but transport is available throughout the state or up to 300 miles. If you are interested in adopting or fostering C.J., call 580.622.6266 or 580.618.3204

C.J. was adopted January 2012 and did not go into the shelter.

Female and male American Staffordshire Terrier mixes. (click on photo for larger image.)
My name is Beauty and my brother, Beast, and I were taken in to custody due to being tied up at an abandoned trailer, no food or water (other than what the neighbors gave us).... Beast could get off his chain but I couldn't.... I am a REAL big sweetheart and I desperately need a home...please call Sulphur at 580-622-6266 or 618-3204.

My name is Beast and I am Beauty's brother.... I'm a love bug too. So if you would like a big strong ball of energy and loving running around your home... I'm your boy! The shelter we're in is really small and all the cages are full so the humans here are getting really worried about it. If I get adopted they might not be so worried? Call them at 580-622-6266

These two dogs were not adopted or fostered. They were euthanized 12/09/2011 due to lack of space at the shelter.

Patches, J.R., C.J., and Thorn all need homes.(click on photo for larger image)

Patches is an 8 year old male American Bulldog. He is a laid back, gentle soul. He was surrendered because his owner works in another city and is rarely home. Patches is a big baby and is good around kids and cats. J.R. is a male Great Pyrenees/Golden Retriever mix, less than one year old and is a good boy. He is kind of shy and scared in the shelter. C.J. is a young, male beagle/bassett hound mix. C.J. was picked up on a busy street in Sulphur, OK. Thorn is a young male heeler/shepherd mix who was surrendered with three other dogs because the owners "didn't have time" for them. These wonderful pets are NOT in a no-kill shelter and their times are limited due to lack of space. If you can find it in your heart to give one of them a loving, forever home, call Amanda at 580.622.6266 or the Sulphur ACO at 580. 618. 3204. Transport is available in the state of Oklahoma or up to 300 miles from Sulphur, OK.

01/23/2012- Okay, about these guys. C.J. found a wonderful home and is a happy dog. Thorn was delivered to his new family by me, personally. He is living large. J.R. had a prospective foster who backed out after meeting him. I vowed to not let him return to the 'shelter' (dog pound) and committed to foster him and pay for his full vetting.

S'alright

One of the best things to do to get a take on the lives of others is to visit random blogs. With Blogger, you simply click on the Next Blog link at the upper left corner of the page. It worries me when I land on a blog that was apparently very active (with photos and junk) at one time and now

sits

quietly,

without being updated

since November 10, 2010.

What happened to the creator of the page? Did she or her computer die? Did they simply cease to be?

*shrugs*

I thought I should check in since it has been several months since I wrote. Stuff happens, sad happens, then you have to get busy. I'm okay, s'alright. Thanks for wondering.

Priorities should not include pink animals

Priorities are food, shelter, utilities, and health care for everyone in your house that you're responsible for, but only in REAL life. Imaginary crops, hammers, bricks and pink sheep for a freakin' Facebook game are NOT. Neither should the Facebook credits to buy any of those aforementioned items be anywhere near the top of your "must have" list. And, you definitely do not borrow money to purchase credits from your elderly parent who lives on a less than adequate fixed income. And, you absolutely should not lie and tell said parent that a grandchild is 1.) deathly ill; 2.) about to be evicted or 3.) in jail in order secure the loan that you have no intention of paying back. I mean, seriously, how low can you go?
Now, you may say that none of this is any business of mine, but it affects me in a trickle down at a sharp angle sort of way but mostly, it just pisses me off.
I'll admit that I have gotten facebook credits but never have I bought them outright. I happened to get bonus credits when I made an online purchase of two shirts from Old Navy. Most of them remain in my account on Facebook. The others were wasted on the stupid revival of Oregon Trail, which was the most hype and the biggest flop ever, in my opinion.

On another note: According to the local freecycle, someone in the next town north needs a microwave. So, later today, I'm going to deliver one to them that I don't need. I'll be glad to get it off my porch.

That is all.

Hell hath done froze over

In a City Council runoff election in the capital city of one of the reddest of the red states, a progressive GREEN Party candidate, Ed Shadid, has won the race for council member in Oklahoma City's Ward 2.

Now, of course, the city councils of most cities are supposed to be composed of members who will work for the good of the city and keep partisan politics out of city business. But, when bank officer Charlie Swinton's supporters started throwing money around to discredit Dr. Shadid (to the tune of half a million dollars) politics and big business obviously became involved in a big way. To Swinton's credit, it is reported that he did tell his supporters to stop with the negative ads and mailers a week or two prior to the runoff. Last night, however, he stated, "... I'm proud of my supporters; proud of what we tried to accomplish.”

What a waste of money and time. The money could not guarantee the seat for Swinton, who received only 85 more votes in the runoff than he did in the primary. And Shadid's numbers? Almost doubled. Tuesday tallies totaled 3,134 compared to 1,461 in the primary.

I don't even live in Oklahoma City, so why am I writing about a runoff election? Because something has happened that was NEVER expected to happen: A progressive candidate has secured a seat on the Oklahoma City council. And, I have a feeling that Dr. Shadid will not sit quietly when corporate priorities threaten to override public projects that benefit ALL the citizens of OKC.

I call bullshit

(The sender of this email expressed his delight to pass this along. I call bullshit.)

"THIS IS HOW TO FIX CONGRESS!

"Congressional Reform Act of 2010." It would contain eight provisions, all of which would probably be strongly endorsed by those who drafted the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

I know many will say "this is impossible." However, Congress has the lowest approval rating of any entity in Government. Now is the time when Americans will join together to reform Congress - the entity that represents us.

We need to get a Senator to introduce this bill in the US Senate and a Representative to introduce a similar bill in the US House. These people will become American heroes.

**********************************
Congressional Reform Act of 2010

1. Term Limits. 12 years only, one of the possible options below.

A. Two Six-year Senate terms
B. Six Two-year House terms
C. One Six-year Senate term and three Two-Year House terms

2. No Tenure / No Pension.

A Congressman collects a salary while in office and receives no pay when they are out of office.

3. Congress (past, present & future) participates in Social Security.

All funds in the Congressional retirement fund move to the Social Security system immediately. All future funds flow into the Social Security system, and Congress participates with the American people.

4. Congress can purchase their own retirement plan, just as all Americans do.

5. Congress will no longer vote themselves a pay raise. Congressional pay will rise by the lower of CPI or 3%.

6. Congress loses their current health care system and participates in the same health care system as the American people.

7. Congress must equally abide by all laws they impose on the American people.

8. All contracts with past and present Congressmen are void effective 1/1/11.

The American people did not make this contract with Congressmen. Congressmen made all these contracts for themselves.

Serving in Congress is an honor, not a career. The Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators, serve your term(s), then go home and back to work.

If you agree with the above, pass it on. If not, just delete."
*******************************

Jiminy Christmas, people, the earth is flat and commonsense is not a word, but two words improperly fused together to save one valuable space in Sarah Palin's twitter posts. She could just shut up and save 140! Wouldn't that be grand?

If each and every attendee at a tea party rally (or take back America to the 1700s rally or a white sheet conference) were polled, I would be willing to bet that less than 10% have ever read the United States Constitution or its XXVII Amendments and yet, they want to change it. And, don't even get my started on that proposed 28th Amendment crap. Sheesh!!

In the first place, the Congressional reform act of 2010 email has been floating around since Fall 2009. There are a few petitions in favor of it (most of which are closed) and a few facebook groups and pages (with 2791members & 943 likers ), the largest having little activity in several months. I get a warm feeling knowing that less than 4000 people out of 150 million facebook users in the U.S. are idiots that propagate this junk.

Anyway, and yada yada, my reply to the sender follows. I signed off with my name, degree and concentration - Legal Studies (I read the U.S. Code, court opinions and legal briefs for fun) - and I grinned with satisfaction.

"Term limits are already in place, via elections. If an employee doesn't do a good job, that employee is terminated and a new employee steps in.
Members of Congress have been required to pay Social Security taxes since 1984.
"Congressional efforts to pass a 'public option' for health insurance would have required everyone except members of Congress to participate in the new federal insurance plan. But, in the final version of health care reform legislation passed in March 2010, 'Members of Congress and congressional staff' will only have access to plans that are created by the health care bill or offered through the exchanges established by the bill."
The size of their pensions is determined by a number of factors (primarily length of service, but also factors such as when they joined Congress, their age at retirement, their salary, and the pension options they chose when they enrolled in the retirement system) and by law cannot exceed 80% of their salary at the time of their retirement.
The passage (in 1992) of the 27th Amendment limits pay raises for members of Congress. http://www.usconstitution.net/const.html#Am27
The passage of Public Law 104-1 (the Congressional Accountability Act of 1995, also know at CAA) made a variety of laws related to civil rights and workplace regulations applicable to the legislative branch of the federal government.Section 201 of the CAA specifically prohibits sexual harassment (as well as harassment on the basis of race, color, religion, or national origin). http://www.compliance.gov/publications/caa-overview/congressional-accountability-act/#caa_201

Angels among us aka Genuine Friends

This is a gift from the heart and one that is truly appreciated.

In times of need and despair, there are angels among us. They are also known as friends.

Thank you, friends.

Bitch o' the day

First: You will notice that there are only 5 posts here even though this page is over 3 years old. Heavy-duty editing and half a bottle of Irish cream did that.

Second: This has been bothering me for several days and I REALLY need to get it off my chest. *Sigh* Here goes.
People in the United States are starving. Children in Oklahoma City, Tulsa, Norman, Lawton and even Ada, Oklahoma have gone to bed cold and hungry tonight. Why?
On Black Friday, the day after the biggest day of encouraged gluttony in the US, stores across America had record sales - CASH sales- of toys and gift merchandise, (including Snuggies) and later that night children went to bed cold and hungry.
This Christmas, many children will not be able to have a Christmas tree in their house - because they have no house. Victims of circumstances or bad choices have forced families to spend days and nights inside their cars or shelters. And yet, people will pay to have professionals come into their homes to decorate for the holidays - not for their own enjoyment, but only to make an impression. My dad called it "putting on the dog," which means showing off and/or pretending you are higher on the social ladder than your own rungs go. My dad was not impressed with such people especially since he was looked down on by those same types.
They don't impress me much, either.

Give to the charity of your choice this Christmas or volunteer your time at one of your local non-profit organizations.
